1. Vital Records From Chicago Newspapers, 1833 through 1848

Our Society has created a composite index to this seven-volume set of books which contain genealogical data extracted from Chicago newspapers. Lengthy articles such as obituaries and accident reports were abstracted. The events took place in Cook County as well as many of the northern counties in Illinois. Our online index gives the following information: surname, 1st name, place, event, page number, year. The place can be either where the event took place or where someone was from. The event can be a i.e. marrriage, death, court action, etc.

Here is one example of an item on page 79 in the 1847 book, and the corresponding entries in the database: Watchman of the Prairies

November 30, 1847. Died.
On the 26th ult., of congestive fever, at the residence of Mr. J. W. Hooker, in this city, Benjamin R. Dodge, aged 21 years, son of Mr. Peter J. Dodge, of Perkins Grove, Bureau Co.
